Glenn (Scottdale) Johnson has some catching up to share, he writes:

MY, MY, MY, WHAT CATCHING UP WE HAVE TO DO.  IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I LAST
"A-MAILED" EVERYBODY, SO THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A WHILE.  I HOPE YOU WON'T
GET BORED.

FIRST - I'M SORRY I MISSED THE HOLIDAY PARTY.  WE HAD PLANNED TO COME, BUT
SOMETHING CAME UP AND WE COULDN'T MAKE IT.  I WAS BUMMED OUT ALL WEEKEND FOR
HAVING MISSED IT.  I REALLY WANTED TO SEE ALL Y'ALL AGAIN.

SECOND - YEAH, THAT WAS FRANKIE KENDALL THAT JIM ET AL WERE TALKING ABOUT.
HE WAS A MAN AMONG CHILDREN.  I TOTED SHINGLES FOR HIM FOR TWO SUMMERS WHILE
IN HIGH SCHOOL.  THE ROOFER I WORKED FOR WAS JODIE GLOSSON, (THE
STEP-BROTHER OF FRANK JAMES), AND THE REMAINDER OF THE CREW WAS FRANKIE, HIS
BROTHER HOYT, AND MY COUSIN ARTIE PARMER (AHS CLASS OF '63).  I CARRIED 85
LB BUNDLES OF SHINGLES UP A LADDER ALL DAY WHILE THEY NAILED THE SHINGLES
ON.  IT WAS GREAT EXERCIZE FOR THE LEGS AND NOW YOU KNOW HOW I GOT SUCH
DISTANCE WITH MY KICKS.  IT DIDN'T HELP WITH THE ACCURACY,  BUT IT SURELY
HELPED ON KICKOFFS.  FRANKIE WAS A "SCOTTDALIAN" ALTHOUGH HE LIVED ON THE
CUSP BETWEEN AVONDALE AND SCOTTDALE.  HE LIVED ON OLD ROCK BRIDGE RD WHICH
RAN DOWN BESIDE CALDWELL'S STORE ON CLARENDON AVE AND ALONG THE BACK OF THE
AMERICAN LEGION GOLF COURSE.  THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME SHADY DEALINGS IF HE
PLAYED FOR THE PIRATES WHILE JIM AND BRUCE PLAYED.  HE WAS A YEAR OLDER THaN
ME WHICH MADE HIM TWO YEARS OLDER THAN Y'ALL.  BACK THEN, I DON'T THINK IT
MATTERED AS MUCH WHAT THE AGE WAS.  I DO KNOW HE PLAYED ONE YEAR WITH THE
SCOTTDALE LITTLE LEAGUE TEAM, ONE OF ONLY TWO YEARS WE HAD A TEAM.  WE
PLAYED A TEAM FROM DECATUR ON THE FIELD BEHIND THE OLD AVONDALE HIGH SCHOOL
GYM. THEY WERE ALL DECKED OUT IN COMPLETE UNIFORMS WHILE ALL WE HAD WAS
T-SHIRTS WITH THE LITTLE LEAGUE SHIELD ON THEM.  OUR HATS DIDN'T MATCH, NOR
DID OUR PANTS, WHICH WERE BLUE JEANS, AND SOME OF US EVEN WORE STREET SHOES
BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY "TENNIS SHOES".  I PITCHED THE FIRST TWO INNINGS
BECAUSE FRANKIE, AS USUAL, WAS LATE.  I WAS GETTING HAMMERED PRETTY GOOD
ALTHOUGH WE WERE HOLDING OUR ON BECAUSE WE HAD SOME GREAT HITTERS.  FRANKIE
GOT THERE, I MOVED TO SHORT-STOP, AND HE COMPLETELY SHUT THAT DECATUR TEAM
DOWN, AND WE WON 8-4.  THAT DECATUR TEAM TORE UP FROM THE FLOOR UP.  ALAS,
FRANKIE IS NO LONGER WITH US.  NEITHER ARE HIS TWO BROTHERS HOYT AND ANOTHER
WHOSE NAME ESCAPES ME.  THEY ALL DIED OF ALCOHOL ABUSE, WHICH IS A SHAME.
FRANKIE KENDALL COULD HAVE GONE A LONG WAY ATHLETICALLY IF HE HAD JUST
STAYED IN SCHOOL, ESPECIALLY UNDER THE TRAINING OF THE FINE COACHES WE HAD
AT AVONDALE.

THIRD - SPEAKING OF ATHLETICS, I REMEMBER US BEATING AN AVONDALE ELEMENTARY
TEAM WHEN I WAS IN THE 7TH GRADE.  I WAS THE QUARTERBACK, RAY MYERS WAS THE
HALFBACK.  THE AVONDALE QUARTERBACK WAS NONE OTHER THAN STEVE MILLS.  HE WAS
A GIANT FOR HIS AGE AND HE WAS ONLY IN THE 6TH GRADE, BUT WE MANAGED TO WIN.
I FORGET WHO ELSE WAS ON THAT TEAM ALTHOUGH I'M SURE BRUCE WAS AND MAYBE
SOME OTHERS THAT I DIDN'T GET TO KNOW  'TIL HIGH SCHOOL.

FOURTH - YEAH IT WAS GREAT GOING TO THE AVONDALE SHOW ON SATURDAYS WHEN WE
WERE GROWING UP.  IT WAS A WAY TO MEET KIDS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS THAT WE
WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW OTHERWISE.  THE OWNER OF THE SHOW (NOT THEATER,
SHOW) WAS MR. ADAMS AND HE DIDN'T PUT UP WITH ANY SHENANIGANS.  WHAT I
ENJOYED MOST THOUGH WAS GOING BY THE AVONDALE DRUG STORE AND GETTING HAROLD,
OR PRENTIS, THE SODA JERKS, TO FIX ME A "LIME SOUR".  THEY ALSO MADE
"LIMEADES" AND "HOME MADE CHERRY COKES", MADE FROM SCRATCH WITH SYRUP,
CHERRY SYRUP AND SODA WATER.  AT SEVERAL OF THE BLUES CLUBS I FREQUENT
AROUND ATLANTA, EITHER TO PLAY OR TO LISTEN,  THEY FIX FOR ME A "LINTHEAD
SPECIAL"  WHICH IS NOTHING BUT A LIME SOUR (SINCE I DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL). IT
TASTES GREAT AND BRINGS BACK OLD MEMORIES.

FIFTH - I REALLY HATE TO HEAR ABOUT SOME OF THE ROUGH TIME SOME OF US ARE
HAVING IN OUR LIVES, WITH OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES, MOSTLY PARENTS.
ISN'T IT GREAT TO HAVE SUCH A FORUM AS THIS TO REACH OUT TO THESE PEOPLE AND
EXPRESS OUR SUPPORT?  THESE PEOPLE WEREN'T JUST PARENTS TO THEIR CHILDREN,
THEY WERE SURROGATE PARENTS TO US ALL.  WHY MR BRINSFIELD EVEN CALLED THE
ATLANTA FALCONS AND GOT ME A TRYOUT AS A KICKER.  HE DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT,
BUT HE DID AND I WILL BE FOREVER INDEBTED TO HIM FOR IT. I HAD JUST
GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE AND STARTED MY CAREER AS AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER SO I
DIDN'T GO, BUT IT WASN'T MR BRINSFIELD'S FAULT.  FRANK OWENS' FATHER WAS
(IS?) GREAT.  SO WAS MR MILLS, STEVE'S FATHER.  EVERYBODY THOUGHT THE WORLD
OF MRS. WEST, GARY'S MOTHER.  SHE WAS TOO PRETTY TO BE A MOTHER, BUT WE TOOK
GARY'S WORD FOR IT.  THERE ARE JUST SO MANY PARENTS WHO BEFRIENDED ME AND
MADE ME FEEL WELCOME WHENEVER I WAS AROUND THEM, THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I
WOULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THEIR HOSPITALITY, SUPPORT AND COUNCIL OVER THE
YEARS (I EARLIER MENTIONED PAT MADDOX'S PARENTS AND SUSAN TREADWELL'S
PARENTS).  THERE'S A BLUES SONG THAT GOES "WHEN THINGS GO WRONG, GO WRONG
WITH YOU, IT HURTS ME TOO", AND THAT'S THE SENTIMENT I WANT TO EXPRESS FOR
ALL OF YOU WHO ARE GOING THROUGH SOME HARD TIMES.  I'M PRAYING FOR ALL OF
YOU.

SIXTH - IT SEEMS THE POLITICAL RHETORIC HAS DIED DOWN AND THAT'S GOOD.  I
FELT LIKE THROWING MY 2 CENTS WORTH IN, BUT WHAT I WANTED TO SAY WAS
PROBABLY SAID MORE ELOQUENTLY THAN I COULD HAVE SAID IT.  BUT NOW THAT THE
ELECTION IS OVER AND THINGS ARE SOMEWHAT BACK TO NORMAL, LET ME SAY THIS.
WHEN WE WALKED OFF THE FIELD AND INTO THE LOCKER ROOM IN DEC, 1963, AS STATE
CHAMPIONS, IT WAS DAVID BENTLEY WHO LED US IN A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR
WHAT WE HAD ACCOMPLISHED. THAT'S WHAT I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER ABOUT MY PAL
DAVID.  THAT BOND BETWEEN ALL OF US TEAMMATES (AND THE STUDENTS WHO
SUPPORTED US) WAS SPECIAL AND IT TRANSCENDS ANY POLITICAL IDEOLOGY.

THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO RUN ON.  I READ THE A-MAIL EVERY DAY, I JUST DON'T
GET A CHANCE TO RESPOND AS OFTEN AS I LIKE.  TAKE CARE.
GLENN JOHNSON
